Yet something else to love about life are the little opportunities that pop up every now and then. Ina Garten calls her fun and food-filled memoir “Be Ready When the Luck Happens”. So much of the last decade, and especially this current adventure, is recognizing luck when it walks by, and stopping to have a chat with it.
I was so lucky that my previous position was eliminated.
I’m vision-focused and stubborn. I needed to be pushed out of an organization and culture that, frankly, wasn’t a good fit from the start. I knew it. People who love me knew it. My body knew it. My blood pressure knew it. But when you’re a person for whom much of whatever success I’ve had resulted from pushing through like an armored tank, it’s difficult to acknowledge a lost cause. It was so clear so quickly that I needed to grab this luck with both hands. And I’m so glad I did.
This experience has shown me how to look for those little glimmers of luck amid the noise, and when you start looking, they are everywhere.
Case in point: Last semester I received an email inquiring about taking on a student teacher. Luck just walked by! I’m so glad I responded as I now have an amazing future teacher in my classroom, bringing fresh ideas and lots of questions every day.
I remember asking myself, “Where can I have the most impact in the time I have left?” It’s taken me a while to realize that sometimes the greatest impact isn’t on a crowd of people, but on one person, spending lots of time together, guiding and chatting and laughing and sharing. And it’s just so fun to watch my student teacher grow in capacity and confidence every day.
A year ago at this time, I had no idea where I would be now. But I was actively building my luck-recognition system.
Take a look around! I think you’ll see luck everywhere too!
